About

The Program:  The Outdoor Education Center at Camp Olympia is a magnet science school within the Houston Independent School District. We are located 90 miles north of Houston in Trinity, TX along the shores of Lake Livingston. Students typically spend four days and three nights learning with us through hands-on experiences.

Our mission is to facilitate a unique and meaningful educational experience for Houston ISD students utilizing our natural setting. Interdisciplinary activities will guide discovery and exploration that stimulate an appreciation and understanding of interdependence:

– one person to another;
– one culture to another;
– people with nature; and
– things within nature

The Blog:  Our staff blog, Piney Woods Press, was created to give our diverse and multi-talented staff the chance to tell stories:  stories of the human and nonhuman happenings here at the OEC; stories that will help prospective employees, former employees, HISD parents, and other friends of our program stay in the loop; stories that will hopefully make you wish you were out here in the woods and on the lake with us. These tales may take the form of photography, naturalist reports, or creative writing, but one thing we hope to guarantee: if it’s happening at the OEC, you can learn about it here!
